In the world today, we often hear about the importance of success, wealth, and personal achievements. But what does the Bible teach us about the true purpose of our talents and treasures? How can we use what God has given us to help those around us? Jesus, in His teachings, shows us that our gifts—whether they be material or spiritual—are not ours to keep, but to share.
God Has Given Us Talents and Treasures. In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus tells the parable of the talents. In this story, a master gives his servants different amounts of money (talents) before going on a journey. Two of the servants invest the talents and return with more, while the third hides his talent out of fear. The master commends the first two servants for their faithfulness and rewards them, but condemns the one who did nothing.
This parable teaches us that God has entrusted each of us with our own special set of abilities, resources, and opportunities. It is our responsibility to use them wisely—not for selfish gain, but to bless others and further the kingdom.
Using Your Talents to Serve Others. 1 Peter 4:10 tells us, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Every talent you have—whether in teaching, caring, prayer, leading, or helping—has been given to us by God to serve those around us. When we use our abilities to serve others, we reflect the love of Jesus and contribute to the building of a community.
Your skills, big or small, can make a difference in someone’s life, even the things you look over and take for granted can make an enormous impact when applied.
Generosity with Our Treasures. In Luke 12:33-34, Jesus says, “Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail.” Here, Jesus calls us to prioritize eternal wealth over earthly treasure.
Our money, time, and possessions are tools for good. We are called to invest in others—whether through direct help, supporting ministries, or offering our time. By giving, we store up treasures in heaven, and help our friends and neighbors.
God has blessed us with talents and treasures not only for our own benefit, but to bless others. Whether we have many gifts or just a few, we are called to use them for the service of others and the glory of God. As we give of ourselves, we become more like Jesus, who gave everything for us.
Let's be faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us, remembering that our true treasure is found in loving and helping our fellow man.
